Karate Belt Test
In my Class I put a HUGE emphasis on fact fluency. Once fact fluency is mastered and comes quickly students can spend more time on the actual problem solving part of math. I expect that all of my students will master their math facts through times 12 by the end of the year. The Karate Belt Test is one way that I help to motivate them! Here is what it looks like: The way it works is that each week I will introduce a times table and we will discuss as a class all of the different strategies to help students remember their facts. Students will then create their own set of flash cards in class and study. On Friday each week students will have a chance to test their skills on the karate belt test. If they achieve a 100% they will move up a belt in the system.

Continental Math League
Continental Math League (CML) is my most favorite program that I use in my classroom! Each year I am in awe of how involved the students get in the problems that they are solving and of the way that they discuss their strategies. CML problems are challenging and take perseverance in problem solving to be successful. Problem solving is an important skill in math and CML can help further your student's progress in the art of problem solving. CML has even been reported to improve student’s reading skills. How It Works *CML is composed of 5 meets. The meets are just like a quiz. Each meet is 6 questions and they will have 30 minutes to complete it. *For every answer that they get correct it will count as 1 point towards their end total. *At the end of all 5 meets the top 2 out of both my homeroom and Ms. Kincaid’s homeroom will receive a medal. *The top 5 out of both my homeroom and Ms. Kincaid’s homeroom will receive a special certificate from CML. *Every student will receive a participation certificate. *We will use practice CML problems in class and for homework to help them prepare for the meets.
